Nick Matthews BSc MRICS qualified as a Chartered Building Surveyor in October 1984 whilst working in London. Since then he has worked for a couple of small architectural practices and a national brewery, before joining a Bath based architects practice in 1985. In 1995 he co-founded a practice with George Batterham.
During the past 30 years he has worked on a huge range of projects from new houses, large scale extensions to schools, barn conversions, oak framed buildings, farm buildings, listed building work, and a great number of conversions and extensions to existing buildings. In addition he has used his surveying skills for advice on a range of building related issues.
His interests lie in the use of natural materials, providing light, efficient, economical and energy 'eco' conscious designs, together with a good understanding of the mechanical and electrical services within a building.
He particularly enjoys the re-organising of older buildings to respond to the changing demands of modern living, with a strong emphasis on the integration of modern services and sustainable heating.
Outside of work, Nick enjoys sailing manages a junior hockey team, competes in Masters swimming competitions (holding a number of Wiltshire County Records) and is a qualified Hockey Umpire. He also manages a small woodland which provides sustainable and renewable firewood for use in the family house. In 2005 he installed a ground source heat pump to provide partial heating to the family home to supplement the woodstoves.
He designed and constructed an energy efficient timber framed extension to his house, believing strongly in the hands-on experience.
Nick has directorial responsibility within the practice for the day-to-day management, IT and HR.
